The first African Conference on Environmental Justice, to be held in Dakar in November 2026, aims to create a permanent space for dialogue and exchange around the emerging concept of environmental justice in Africa. The conference builds on existing research collaborations between French-speaking researchers in Africa and Europe — particularly within the EJJE network (https://justiceenvironnementale.inrae.fr/) — with the goal of establishing an African research network on environmental justice and bringing together researchers and civil society actors working on these issues across the continent.
What makes these scientific and civic meetings distinctive is their inclusive and innovative approach: they move beyond the traditional academic conference model to enable broad participation by African citizens, which is itself a matter of justice. At the intersection of science and society, the conference will address environmental and agricultural challenges from multiple perspectives, encourage the development of fair solutions adapted to African realities, and strengthen the resilience of communities facing socio-ecological challenges.
Approximately one hundred participants will gather to contribute original materials, such as scientific presentations, artistic works, posters, and more. Discussions will take place in French, English, or the speakers' native languages. A simultaneous translation system may be implemented, using either AI or translation students from UCAD. Our previous experiences have demonstrated the effectiveness of translation features available in PowerPoint and Zoom. While most presentations will occur in person, a videoconference link will be provided for a wider audience to follow the discussions. Speakers will be able to stay at UCAD. Lunch and coffee breaks will be provided.
Within the limits of available resources, a limited number of participation grants will be made available to participants. More information will follow.
